History of Bekal Recreation Centre Ltd.

The origin of Bekal Recreation Centre Ltd. dates back to 31st August 1997, when eleven like-minded personalities from Kanhangad met at the banks of the Periyar River and mooted the idea of establishing a Recreation Centre.

Founder Promoters

Mr. T.V. Kunhikannan (IPS), Mr. M. Sreekandan Nair, Mr. Balraj K.R.,  Mr. Rajendra Shenoy B., Dr. K.G. Pai, Mr. V.K.A. Karim, Dr. M.R. Nambiar, Dr. Rajan N.P., Mr. H. Sreedhara Kamath, Mr. K. Srinivas Shenoy, and Smt.Rajalakshmi B M

Guided by a shared vision, the promoters met frequently, often accompanied by friends and families, and the group gradually expanded. Together, they identified a suitable location and finally acquired land on the serene bank of the Arayi River, close to NH-66 between Kanhangad and Nileshwar. At that time, club culture was largely unfamiliar in this region, and the promoters had to overcome many challenges. Their perseverance ultimately led to the establishment of the only recreation Centre of its kind between Calicut and Mangalore.

Life Memberships were introduced at an affordable fee, and the master plan, designed by a renowned Kerala architect, was implemented in phases, many of which have already been successfully completed.

The Centre was incorporated as a Private Limited Company on 16th February 2001, and was later converted into a Public Limited Company on 10th February 2003.

Today, Bekal Recreation Centre Ltd. stands proudly as a Public Limited Company with 332 shareholders, fulfilling its mission of fostering recreation, cultural activities, and fellowship among its members.

Arts and Culture

Our lands where history, spirituality, and creativity beautifully converge, offering visitors an enriching cultural experience. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Nityanandasramam, established by Swami Nityananda just south of the Hosdurg Taluk Office. Nestled on a mountain slope once covered in forest, the ashramam features 45 hand-carved caves (guhas) and a temple modeled after the world-renowned Somanatha Temple of Gujarat, designed in 1963. The highlight here is the magnificent life-size panchaloha statue of Swami Nityananda, which continues to attract devotees and admirers from across the country.

Equally significant is the Our Lady of Sorrows Church, the oldest church in Kasaragod district, built in 1890. Located north of Kasaragod, this Gothic-style Roman Catholic church, belonging to the Mangalore Diocese, recently celebrated its centenary, with renovations further enhancing its timeless beauty.

The cultural richness of the region is also reflected in Ajanoor village, the birthplace of legendary poet P. Kunhiraman Nair, playwright Rasika Siromani Koman Nir, and freedom fighter Vidwan P. Kelu. This village has become a proud cultural hub, keeping alive the literary and artistic heritage of Kerala.

A short distance away lies the renowned Madiyan Koolom Temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali (Kaalarathri), along with deities like Bhagavathi and Kshethrapalakan. Unique in its traditions, the temple hosts poojas performed by both Brahmin priests and the Maniyani sect, symbolizing inclusivity. Its festivals, celebrated in the Malayalam months of Dhanu (December–January) and Edavam (May–June), attract devotees with vibrant rituals and cultural performances.

Another jewel in the cultural landscape is the Anandashramam, founded in 1939 by the revered Vaishnava saint Swami Ramadas. Situated amidst lush coconut and mango groves, the ashramam offers serene surroundings and a hilltop retreat ideal for meditation. From here, devotees enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the expansive landscape, finding solace and peace in nature’s embrace.

Together, these sacred spaces, historic monuments, and cultural landmarks make Bekal and Kanhangad not only centers of spiritual devotion but also living testaments to the enduring traditions of art, culture, and heritage.
